Does there exist a canonical translation of Edmond Privat’s “Karlo” into English? I am thinking of settling on some canonical English text to use as a framework for creating ESL exercises for my students here in China who are learning English. Rather than just pluck inane questions out of the air, such as “What is the weather like in your home town?”, a question like, “What did Karlo do when the man laughed at him?” would have more “traction” and opportunity for engagement/discussion, and such questions would be virtually inexhaustible, unlike questions about their hometown weather, their favorite food, ideal holiday destination, etc., which we soon run out of.
I believe it should be “Ĉeesta!”, but neither Wells nor Benson lists this as an option under “here”. My guess is that they both simply overlooked this special meaning of “here”. Remember that we also need the negative. If someone is absent, those present will reply “Not here!” rather than just let a lengthening silent void imply to the roll-taker that the person is absent, and for this negative, the negative of “Ĉeesta!”, namely, “Ne ĉeesta!”, seems all the more appropriate than the negative of “Ĉi tie!”, namely, “Ne ĉi tie!”. So, what do you think? Feedback, please.

Translating “to share” by means of “dividi” has never seemed quite right to me. Happily, I noticed what I think is a right-on translation in the February issue of “Esperanto” magazine: “kunpartigi”. Here is the relevant extract:
“dum la irado oni pli bone interkonatiĝas, subtenas sin reciproke, kunpartigas spertojn kaj emociojn.” (p.30 ESPERANTO februaro 2011 1244 (2))
(I think “spertojn” ought to be “travivaĵojn”, but that is another issue.)
