They had yet another session of poetry reading in honor of Halloween; I only heard about it a day or two in advance, but I grabbed a poem from Voĉoj de poetoj el la spirita mondo -- I was the only person who read a poem from an actual ghost!
In the spirit of the holiday season [the looming month of Tishrei], I'm taking a stab at translating one of my favorite prayers, the initial part of the bedtime shema, a short prayer written, I think, by the Arizal , though the basic idea of a nightly prayer forgiving everyone who may have sinned against you is substantially older and is mentioned in the mishnah.
Hi, I recently played Diplomacy again for the first time in ~25 years and had a great time. It's a little tough to play face-to-face, though, you need 7 people and several hours. But it can be played asynchronously via email, or even through Facebook and it's great fun and need not take loads of time.
Looking about to see if there are Esperanto players, I found several links to
Jon Stewart-Taylor's page , which looks nice but it hasn't been updated since 1998.
My son has once again qualified for the
US Linguistics Team for the
International Linguistics Olympiad
which this year will be held in Poland at the same time as the UKE.
I think I got my copy for free a few years ago, but I see the retbutiko has it quite cheaply. At any reasonable price, the weirdness per dollar quotient is just marvelous, as the book is ostensibly poems written by dead Esperanto-language and Portuguese-language poets, as channeled by a Brazilian Spiritalist. And, while I think the quality of the poems themselves are uneven [not that I'm such a great judge of this], some are really not bad at all!
For the second year, the literature club at the online high school at which I work had an all-school poetry reading (It's still going on; I'm listing to others read while I type.)

but ultimately rolled a die and the die forced me to read one of my own English language poems.
This year, I read Ĉi-Nokte, one of Julius Balbin's haunting poems on the holocaust. It was pretty well received!
I have frequently told the story of how I became interested in Esperanto when my 8-year old son, who was already becoming interested in languages and communication, came to me with his idea for making up a new language of his own.

The IMO (International Math Olympiad) questions have been
posted online recently -- in quite a multitude of languages! You can see 39 separate documents of the problems, which includes several regional variations of the same language (2 in Korean, several in Arabic, Simplified Chinese vs. Traditional Chinese, etc).
These are VERY tricky problems!
