Katolika Pilgrimado en Vaŝingtono

KriZe's picture

Cuba Travel Restrictions Update

KriZe's picture

While it seems certain now that U.S. turnout for this year's Universala Kongreso will be underwhelming, there is still a chance that the ban will be lifted in time to make a last-minute, legal trip to the island (assuming of course, you have obtained your visa or tourist card from the Cuban government).

In 2009, the "Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act" was introduced in both houses (H.R. 874, S.428), which would have allowed Americans to travel to Cuba without obtaining a license. The bill has almost enough cosponsors to constitute a majority, and had bipartisan support.

Brand Names

KriZe's picture

As a daily "home user" of Esperanto, I frequently bump into the problem of expressing something I've never discussed in Esperanto. This is especially true when proper brand names are used in conversation. Sometimes, I have to just express the word in English, which will by extension mean occasional word combinations from both languages, such as referring to the caretakers on a cruise ship as the "Fun Factory-istoj," or my last car as the "(Pontiac) Montana-aĉo"

At our national conference in St. Louis last May, I was charged by the Estraro with the task of creating a new logotype for Esperanto-USA. In setting forth about that task, I had several design concepts that I shared with the board. I pointed out two things about logotypes, in the first place, people tend to be drawn toward more rounded forms, rather than pointy, prickly forms, and in the second place, some colors (green and red) draw a less favorable reaction than others (blue, orange and yellow).

E° D° E°: ĉu kontraŭ-usona?

KriZe's picture

Ulrich Matthias, verkisto kaj aktiva Esperantisto, antaŭ iom da monatoj diris pri la partio EDE (Eŭropo – Demokratio – Esperanto), kaj ĝiaj klopodoj kandidati en Eŭropaj Parlamentaj balotadoj de 2009:

Necesas decidi, ĉu ni tre malferme aŭ nur malrekte kontraŭu usonan hegemonion.

"Esperanto" is the winning word in Pittsburgh's spelling bee

KriZe's picture

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's annual sixth grade spelling bee was won by a girl who won by correctly spelling "Esperanto." Yes, a word from a language where every word is spelled as it is pronounced. Congratulations, Ellie Pierce.
